Disney XD's Decline Issue

                                                        Disney XD's Decline Issue

There are many channels that air mostly action shows and cartoons made by Disney. One of the channels, Disney XD is a good example of a channel of that description. Disney XD used to be called “Toon Disney” but when the action-oriented series from the nightly programming block, “Jetix” and live action series began airing on the channel, that’s when “Toon Disney” came into the rebrand that remains alive today. However, after 6 years of Disney XD’s launch date (2015), the channel began to improve by focusing more on the animated series, airing anime syndicated content, declining on live action series, rerunning older series, including their bumpers and promos. Although, after 3 years of the new DXD rebrand (2018), multiple animated original series including acquired series had been moving over to Disney Channel which is causing the channel to lose original content. There are other changes that the channel might of made, but the content removal is the most notable.
For the programming removals, certain animated series like Star vs. the forces of evil, DuckTales (2017), Milo Murphy’s Law, and Big Hero 6: the series have moved to Disney Channel so that they can get better ratings and more airtime. From that change, it seems very good that those shows are getting better treatment but it can concern DXD viewers who have seen the shows and it can also affect the scheduling. To me, it’s not really a big issue because I pretty much agree to this change because, these four shows do actually fit better on Disney Channel than on Disney XD. Disney XD would be better at broadcasting older reruns than new episodes of ongoing series like how Toon Disney did back in 1998-2009. When I heard about the transfers, I thought that all of Disney XD’s ongoing series would move out of the channel to make room for older reruns on the schedule. It would only let current DXD series like Phineas and Ferb, Gravity Falls, Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Wander Over Yonder, Star vs. the forces of evil, Pokemon, Inazuma Eleven: Ares, Beyblade Burst, Kick Buttowski: Suburban Daredevil, and Mickey Mouse (2013) to be aired until further notice. Therefore, this could lead up to the relaunch of the Toon Disney Channel a few months later. This would be the opposite of what Boomerang started to do back in June 2nd,2014.

Speaking of older reruns, Disney XD had recently re-aired Kim Possible, Lilo and Stitch the series, Phineas and Ferb, Wander over Yonder, Randy Cunningham: 9th grade ninja, Kick Buttowski: Suburban daredevil, Fish Hooks, and Fillmore!. Since June 18th, 2018, Disney XD aired 3 hour marathons of those shows twice each day for one week per show. Therefore, viewers had made rumors of Toon Disney’s comeback due to the amount of nostalgic advertisements that the channel has aired. Disney XD should definitely continue to air older reruns to increase potential for a revival of Toon Disney since the channel has been going through a change of focus over the past year. They should definitely continue that trend until the next rebrand.
Now for the scheduling, Disney XD plays the same shows over and over every day without further changes. These shows are Phineas and ferb, DuckTales (2017), Gravity Falls, Star vs. the forces of evil, Big City Greens, and Big Hero 6: the series. They also play adult themed series for an hour and a half which was something Disney XD did for a while in July 2017 before discontinuing a few months later. The only two shows that play in the evening are Parker Plays and Polaris: Player Selects which they rarely air new episodes. These two shows should be played on ESPN instead, not on Disney XD. There should also be enough time slots to rerun older series that were previously ran on Toon Disney so that Disney XD can get more variety in their scheduling. Eventually, more rumors of Toon Disney’s comeback to cable TV would become official. For the most part, the scheduling looks fine. The schedule creators just need to move the 2 live action series from the former DXP block off the channel, add more older reruns, and reduce the amount of airings of shows currently airing more than once on the schedule.
In conclusion, Disney XD still remains as a good Disney channel however, due to their decline, in this case, it is maybe time to go back to what Disney XD was before instead of having to completely cease its broadcast. The bumper and promo animation doesn’t bother me that much, which is why I didn’t talk about it. Other than that, It’s time for a change in broadcasting.
